    Dear Students and Parents,

    Welcome to IJHS Rattler Band! I am really looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. My name is Mrs. Hudson and I am the Jr. High Band Director. I have 21 years of successful teaching experience and I am excited about many more very successful years here at Industrial. I think music is an important part of a well-rounded curriculum for any child and Band is a great vehicle for music education. I take music and Band very seriously. However, I do like to have a good time and will make Band FUN! I hope it becomes your child’s favorite time of the day. I know it is going to take a while for us to get used to each other and I will try to make the transition as smooth as possible. Please make note of the information below concerning class room rules, rehearsal procedures, grading procedures, etc.

    Classroom rules:
    1. Be prompt.
    2. Be prepared.
    3. Be respectful.

    My classroom rules are short, sweet and simple. However, if all of us follow all three rules, we will have a great experience together.


    1st offense – verbal warning 2nd offense – conference with student 3rd offense – detention and phone conference with parents 4th offense – referral to office

    “Crossing the Line” behavior - immediate office referral
    1. When the behavior is illegal.
    2. When a student curses or makes threats to an adult.
    3. When behavior is a major disruption to the classroom.
    4. When behavior is a threat to the safety and welfare of teacher and students.
    5. When rules are constantly and/or seriously broken.

    Tardies: Refer to District Handbook and policy.

    Grading Procedures:

    Major grades will count 60% and will include (but are not limited to) playing tests and required performances.
    Daily grades will count 40% and will include (but are not limited to) weekly practice cards, weekly participation grades, periodic materials/music checks and written assignments.

    Absences and Make-up Work: Refer to District Handbook and policy. Because a missed performance can't be made-up, students will be given the opportunity to replace that grade with a 1 page report on a composer. Guidelines and expectations will be given prior to writing.


    IISD provides all instruments for all students. Brass players will be supplied with a mouthpiece and reed players will be supplied with a reasonable number of reeds (10 per year). Percussion students will be supplied with one set of sticks and mallets. Students are expected to take care of their instrument and keep it in good working order. This will include regular cleanings (inside and outside at least once a month), proper lubrication and maintenance. Students should notify the director immediately of any problems or damage to the instrument to help prevent further damage from occurring. IISD will pay for regular cleaning and maintenance due to normal wear and tear. Students/parents will be responsible for paying for damage caused by abuse or neglect of the instrument (dropping instrument, sitting on instrument, failure to clean regularly, hitting or banging instrument against other objects, etc.).


    Beginner Band students will need:

    1. Zipper pouch with pencil, red pen, blue/black pen and a highlighter
    2. One box tissues for room.
    3. Binder any color with a few page protectors.

    Advanced Band students will need:

    1. 1" or 1.5" binder, any color with page protectors.
    2. Zipper pouch with pencil, red pen, blue/black pen and a highlighter
    3. One box tissues for the room


    Beginner Band students will not have uniform.
    Advanced Band students will wear a uniform to all specified performances. It will include a maroon polo style Band shirt ($10.00) and black bottoms (jeans, slacks, pants) and dark shoes (no flip flops). Details about the Band shirt will come later.

    Students will also need at least one "dressy" out fit for concerts and competitions. Girls will need a nice dress (within dress code), skirt and blouse or nice pant suit. Boys will need a pair of slacks or colored jeans (the black ones are fine), a dress shirt with collar (long or short sleeved) and a tie (clip-ons are fine).

    Band Fee:

    There is a $40.00 Instrument Usage Fee assessed to all Band students. The fee will be due in full by October 1st. Payment plans can be arrange if necessary.

    Performances and Competitions:

    Performances and competitions are considered an extension of the classroom. Therefore, all students are expected to attend all events. If there are conflicts, please let me know as early as possible and we will work something out.

    Performances for Beginner Band will include the Fall Concer,t Christmas concert, Chicken Supper and Mother’s Day Concert. Beginner Band competitions include the Cobra Band Festival and Solo/Ensemble Contest.

    Performances for Advanced Bands will include a Football Game, Fall Concert, Christmas Concert, Pre-Contest Concert, Chicken Supper and Mother’s Day concert. Advanced Band competitions include All Region Band Auditions, UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest, and UIL Solo/Ensemble Contest.

    Dates for all competitions and performances will be on the Band Calendar that you will receive by September 1st. Details and reminders for all performances and competitions will come in a timely fashion before each event.

    Parental Help:

    Parental involvement is crucial to the success of any activity. Parents are always welcome in the Band Hall. I will also be needing chaperones/help with some of our events.

    Spring Trip:

    Advanced Band students will be taking a Spring Trip in May to Fiesta Texas (pending Mr. Williams approval). This is a reward trip for all the hard work that the Band students do throughout the year. Students that are eligible and participate in the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest are automatically eligible for the Spring Trip. Students who may be ineligible for UIL can earn the right to go on the trip by having no un-excused absences from all other Band events. Cost of the trip will be set at a later date.


    All Band students will be asked to participate in a Fall Fundraiser to begin in October. We will be having a Spring fundraiser as well. Details will come at a later date.
